It’s been more than 40 years since Grease first hit cinemas — but audiences are still hopelessly devoted to Sandy, Danny and the rest of Rydell High.

The film, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-john, is an adaptation of the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

It told the story of greaser Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, a transfer student from Australia, who fell in love during the summer break and thought they’d never see each other again — only to find themselves face-to-face again when the school year starts.

Sandy becomes part of the Pink Ladies, while Danny is the leader of the T-birds — and the film follows as the two of them navigate their relationship, as well as high school life.

The cast also included JeŽ Conaway, Barry Pear, Michael Tucci and Kelly Ward as the rest of the T-birds — and Stockard Channing, Didi Conn, Jamie Donnelly and Dinah ManoŽ as the Pink Ladies.

And while it may be di“cult to picture anyone else playing Danny or Sandy, it turns out that some other famous faces were considered for the roles before Travolta and Newton-john were cast.

Danny, but is said to have turned down the role because he was worried about being typecast.

Carrie Fisher and Susan Day were among those considered for Sandy before Olivia was cast.

And they weren’t the only parts in Grease that almost went to someone else.

Lucie Arnaz auditioned for the role of Rizzo, but the part ultimately went to Stockard — while Elvis is said to have been considered for the role of Teen Angel, as is Donny Osmond. The role ended up being played by Frankie Avalon.

While celebrating the film’s 40th anniversary in 2018, Olivia opened up about the experience of making the movie — as well as her longtime friendship with Pulp Fiction actor Travolta.

She told People, “We did something life-changing, making that film.

“[At the premiere] you got the feeling from the energy that something was happening. It was a huge response.

“I feel grateful to be a part of that and to have worked with him [Travolta]. We’ve stayed friends ever since.”

To date, Grease has grossed more than $390 million worldwide — and it was nominated for a number of awards, including four Golden Globes and one Academy Award.

A sequel film, Grease 2, was released in 1982. Set two years after the original group of pals graduated, the film saw Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle PfeiŽer lead the cast of a new group of greasers.

Some familiar faces from the first film returned, including Didi Conn’s Frenchy and Eve Arden’s Principal Mcgee.

In 2019, it was reported that a prequel film, Summer Loving, was in the works.

It was said that the movie would tell the story of Sandy and Danny’s summer, where they met and fell in love.

The same year, Olivia and John dressed up as their iconic characters once again for the Meet n’ Grease sing-a-long in Florida.

Last year, Paramount+ released Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies, a prequel series set four years before the events of the original film.
