SATURDAY Saving Private Ryan, Ch4, 9.05pm
Steven Spielberg’s Second World War blockbuster stars Tom Hanks as Capt John H Miller, the leader of a platoon of D-day soldiers ordered to
nd and rescue Private Ryan, who was among the advance US forces, and is now the sole surviving sibling of a family of four brothers.
The plan, a propaganda exercise ordered by army chief George C Marshall (Harve Presnell), means the platoon have to reluctantly give up ghting the Germans and set off on their quest to recover the soldier (although they are not without German-related diversions along the way).
But when they eventually nd Ryan, the moral question posed by Spielberg is: what do they do next?

Amy Heckerling’s high-school take on Jane Austen’s novel Emma.
Thanks to her rich Beverly Hills lawyer daddy, Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) has it all. She and her equally wealthy, fashion-obsessed friend Dionne (Stacey Dash) decide to take a new girl at school, Tai (Brittany Murphy), who they think is terminally unhip, under their wing and make sure she nds the right boyfriend.
But they soon realise they’ve created a monster, and a variety of problems for themselves. Also starring Paul Rudd.
MONDAY Spider-man: No Way Home, BBC One, 7.45pm
Spider-man seeks the help of Doctor Strange to forget his exposed secret identity as Peter Parker. However, Strange’s spell goes horribly wrong, leading to unwanted guests entering their universe.
TUESDAY
Flight, Film4, 9pm Robert Zemeckis directs Denzel Washington in this disaster movie with a twist, about a hard-drinking, drug-using airline pilot who can’t do right for doing wrong.
When a commercial aeroplane runs into trouble mid- ight, it is the quick thinking, high capability, and nerve of Captain Whip Whitaker (Washington) that saves all but six of the passengers. But Whip is recovering from an all-night bender.
And to aid him in that recovery and prepare him for ight he has snorted a sizeable line of cocaine.
Having averted — or inverted — disaster, Whip is celebrated as a hero.
He realises that he must clean up his act. He retreats to the farm he grew up on to do just that. But then a blood test showing that he was drunk at the time emerges.
Was it the fact he was high that allowed him to perform the audacious move that saved so many lives? And even if that is the case, is it beside the point? And can Whip avoid going from hero to zero?
