amazing staff.

“So everything is there in place for us to do the right thing and be successufl.

“This is such a competitive league and every game is hard.

“Last week against Shelbourne we got a scrappy goal to win 1-0. UCD and Shels drew so that shows what it’s like.

“You tick off each game and then move on to the next game and don’t get over-excited.”

McEleney started on the left wing against Shels with Joe Thomson slotting into the No.10 role where McEleney spent most of his time at Dundalk.

But his winning goal arrived just after he switched to his more accustomed position, pouncing when Ronan Boyce’s header was saved.

“I was able to spin off the play when the cross came in and was able to anticipate the second ball when the keeper made the save.

“I’m here to do a job and I’ve played wide many’s a time during my career.

“I know what is expected and when I get into my position it’s up to me to make things happen. Luckily I did that.”

Injuries have dealt McEleney a difficult hand in recent seasons but he now senses that he could be moving to a more settled period.

“It’s frustrating, it was a case of trying to get through niggles and getting my body where it needs to be.

“I’ve been here before and my injuries are no secret. But the important thing is that I know what I’m capable of.

“I’m getting there although it’s obviously been a slow preseason, trying to get through games and those few niggles.

“Hopefully the tide will turn and I can just go free. Time will tell.”

Higgins would hand Michael Duffy his first involvement of the season as he shakes off a few minor injuries.

“Michael hasn’t been far away for the past few matches and we’ll make a decision on him this morning,” explained Higgins.

“Ciaron Harkin is our only long term injury but we’ll see how things are before we travel and decide from there.”
