He’s brazilian and he cost 40 million!

- By ian BaKer

JOELINTON was given a standing ovation by his Newcastle pals after scoring two goals on his 100th Premier League appearance.

And at long last he appears to be paying off the transfer fee that has so clearly weighed him down.

It has been tough going for the Brazilian, who was signed from Hoffenheim in 2019.

But now, under new boss Eddie Howe, he is showing why the Toon splashed so much money on him.

Team-mate Sean Longstaff revealed: “After the game the changing room was buzzing. When he came in the whole room erupted.

“We see how hard he works and the unfair criticism he gets. We know the quality he has. He’s outstanding and we could have cheered him every game.

“It was 100 Premier League appearances for him, such a special day. He deserves his two goals, he’s a joy to play with and be around every day.

“I’m over the moon for him, the whole team is.”

Arrival

Joelinton’s recent progress has not only coincided with Howe’s arrival but also with a terrace ditty.

Newcastle fans have adapted the Oasis song She’s Electric with the words ‘He’s Brazilian, he only cost 40 million’.

Howe has played the 25-year-old in a more withdrawn role but moved him further forward for this game.

The player responded with two fine finishes, with his right and left boots, on 35 and 41 minutes to put this game beyond doomed Norwich.

Then an horrendous error by Tim Krul gifted another Brazilian, Bruno Guimaraes, a third four minutes after the break.

Four straight wins for the Toon have put them into the top half of the table after being firm relegation contenders for most of the campaign.

And boyhood Newcastle fan Longstaff, who returned to the starting line up at Carrow Road, is loving every minute of it.

He said: “It’s been a pretty crazy turnaround. Behind the scenes, the new manager and staff have put in hours and hours of work.

“Now the changing room is buzzing. It’s crazy what happens when everyone is together – players, staff and fans. It can be a pretty powerful thing and we’re showing it.

“As a fan I want them to go right to the top. I hope we will see some massive games in a few years at St James’ Park.”

Canaries captain Grant Hanley admitted that relegation is inevitable in a downbeat interview.

He said: “Getting beat 3-0 in what felt like a must-win game is reality difficult to take.

“We need to show more character.

“Everyone in the dressing room knows that. There are still points to be played for.”
