That was a llo blow ‘We can ’go on run’ 23

- ■■Neil McLEMAN

DAvINSON SANCHeZ came on in the 35th minute with Spurs 1-0 up and was subbed off again 23 minutes later with them 2-1 down serenaded at St Mary’s as “Old Roy Hodgson, he’s one of our own” by delirious Palace fans after this third straight win since returning to succeed Vieira as interim manager, has the 24-year-old firmly back in his side, and looking a different player, with three goals in his last two games.

Should Gareth be looking again? Former England boss Hodgson said: “Yes, why not? I never push national coaches.

“But if you are talking about a player’s ambition, young as he is, with a massive possibility to keep improving and doing well with every Premier League game he plays, if I was him, I would be saying I’m so good that I’m going to make that my ambition.”

Sluggish

Palace might have been a bit sluggish against a desperate, bottom-of-the-table Saints early on, but as soon as Eze put his foot on the gas, they were never in trouble.

A few half-time tweaks from wily old Roy though, and Palace took control.

Eze found Jordan Ayew with a fine ball, he went by Ainsley Maitland-Niles to cross, Gavin Bazunu flapped and pushed the ball straight out and there was Eze to tap home.

Fourteen minutes later Eze’s lovely turn left Moussa Djenepo on his backside, and he stroked a lovely low drive past Bazunu from 20 yards.

Theo Walcott has insisted that his young team need to stick together and ignore the frustration and anger in the stands.

He said: “If you stay negative it is a downward spiral. Players realise that. If they haven’t realised that already, then we are finished.”

DANGO OUATTARA scored his first Bournemouth goal — just a week after getting hauled off in the first half at Leicester — to again show Gary O’Neil’s magic touch.

The January signing from Ligue 1 Lorient was hooked off after only 38 minutes at the King Power Stadium as “a tactical thing” — and Philip Billing scored the winner two minutes later. At the Tottenham Stadium, the Burkina Faso star was sent on by O’Neil after 79 minutes and converted

Dominic Solanke’s pass for the injury-time winner.

“Dango produced a bit of genius at the end,” said Ryan Christie. “I think everybody thought he was going to hit it on his left but he chopped inside on his right. What a finish so late in the game. I am buzzing for him and what a way to get your first goal.

“What a time, especially with the run-in. With the attributes he has he is going to be a big player for us. Hopefully he can go on a run as well.”

First

Christie claims stylish Bournemouth are now playing with the confidence to win every game.

On Saturday the Cherries secured back-to-back top-flight away victories for the first time since October 2018.

The next three games are against relegation rivals West Ham, Southampton and Leeds and the Scotland star said: “There are so many teams in and around us so when you get a result against them — and we felt how big the Leicester win was — it creates a gap between you and others. West Ham is a big one.

“Do the two away wins make us feel we can beat anyone? Absolutely.

“We have confidence now from going to places like this. It boosts our confidence. We are in a good place.

“We are in a good run of form. We need to keep that going.”
