STEVE EVANS says a chat with Alex Ferguson first convinced him of Rotherham’s DNA – and says that character will fire the club’s bid to bounce back from relegation.

Rotherham boss Evans (above) returned to the club last month for a second spell after first taking charge in 2012, leaving Crawley Town to move back to the Millers.

And he says the roll call of the club’s former managers highlights why he believes the club will quickly recover after dropping into League One.

Evans said: “We have a certain DNA at Rotherham since the days of Tommy Docherty, Ian Porterfield and Emlyn Hughes. These are historic names.

“I wasn’t absolutely sure I would take the job when I was offered it the first time around and I phoned Sir Alex Ferguson.

“And he said, ‘With all due respect you are the only one I know in Crawley but I know the Rotherham United managers’ history’.

“And of course I’d read up on it and Sir Alex named those names and a few more.

“So this is a really proud football club and now what we need to do is lick our wounds, let them heal and come back stronger, which is what this club has always done.”

Two goals each from Tom Eaves and Jordan Hugill and a Sam Nombe strike clinched a convincing victory for the home side, with Ollie Tanner and Nat Phillips replying for Cardiff.

Bluebirds ended the season 12th in the table.

Boss Erol Bulut said: “My future? We had positive talks with our chairman so I think the next step will be from the club’s side.

“Of course, we do not have so much time. I have to make decisions also for myself, for my future, and also the club’s.

“It’s best for everyone if we can make quicker decisions rather than wait because we are losing time in many things.”
