JOE WALSH revealed he had been counting down the days to his first QPR start.

The keeper, 22, was handed his full debut by boss Marti Cifuentes after Rangers secured their Championship future last week.

And he came within seven minutes of marking the occasion with a clean sheet against Coventry as Cifuentes’s side saw out the season with a third successive win.

Walsh (above) said: “The gaffer told me on Wednesday morning and I have been buzzing since then. Every day I was thinking it was one day nearer.

“It went so quick today but I loved every single second of it.

“I’m glad we won. That was what we cam here to do and anything I can do to help that happen makes me happy.

“I’ve been on loan at Accrington and I’ve used my experience there to prepare for every game in exactly the same way, whether I am starting or not.

“I thought we held out really well and could have got another goal. Overall it was a really positive performance.”

First-half goals from Ilias Chair (above) and Morgan Fox put QPR in control with Jamie Allen replying for Coventry late on.

Coventry boss Mark Robins said: “Overall the season has been a memorable one, although we are disappointed. This time last year we were in the play offs and the teams that are in it this year, congratulations to them and the teams that have been promoted.

“This season has been really tough and I don’t see anything being different next season. We have a load to do during the summer and in pre-season, but that’s for later.”

Rangers, who were worried by relegation for most of the season, in the end finished six points above the drop zone.

FA Cup battlers Coventry finished nine points behind the play-off spots.
