I Tav to say, he is good ■Ian MURTAGH
CHRIS Wilder has hailed Middlesbrough’s ‘Man for all Reasons’ Marcus Tavernier.
It’s been quite a week for the Tavernier family.
Big bruv James captained Rangers to a famous Europa League win over Borussia Dortmund and Marcus scored his second goal of the season as Boro came from behind to beat West Brom.
Wilder has been lauded for his tactical tweaks and substitutions early in the second half, which swung the game dramatically Boro’s way, with his decision to switch Tavernier to leftwing back paying off spectacularly.
Tavernier (22) has occasionally found himself a fans’ scapegoat but has a huge admirer in his manager, who loves the youngster’s adaptability.
“Marcus is still growing up and still learning the game, but he does so many things right for us and has played a huge part in our good results,” said Wilder.
Energy
“The lad has great energy and enthusiasm and has already played in a lot of different positions for the club.
“He’s someone who just gets on with it and produces consistent performances.
“And for me, the great thing is I know I can slot him in as a six, an eight or as a wing- back without complaint.
“He’s trying to add goals to his game, so we were all delighted for him the other night.”
Boro will have the backing of more than 5,000 fans at Barnsley today, and Wilder’s message to his players is to make sure their attitude is spot on at kick- off time.
“Don’t lose it in the dressing room,” he said. “We have to be right in ourselves to give us a chance to produce the kind of performance we’ll need to win.”
