IT CERTAINLY wasn’t the most important win of Mickey Harte’s lengthy Tyrone stewardshi­p, but it was probably the most unique.

Ten years ago this weekend, Tyrone went to Newbridge for a Division One League fixture and quickly fell 0-7 to 0-0 behind, setting the tone for an afternoon during which they were largely outplayed by Kildare.

The deficit was five points entering injury time, of which there would be just one minute.

They swept upfield and Ronan O’neill finished a neat move for a goal which looked no more than a consolatio­n at that stage.

But there was still time for a kickout, which they won, and a ricocheted shot from Mattie Donnelly was broken by Kyle Coney to Mark Donnelly, who had an open goal that he took full advantage of.

The final whistle was sounded and, amazingly, Tyrone had won by a point.

It was the 10th anniversar­y of Cormac Mcanallen’s passing and Harte, a devoutly spiritual man, pointed to the heavens.

“I have no doubt he was (looking down),” he smiled. “How else could you win a game like that? It had to be some divine interventi­on but that’s it, we did think about Cormac in our Mass today and we did talk about him in our changing room.

“He’s very much in our minds and all we wanted to do was give a creditable performanc­e in his memory. He would be very proud about the way that finished, though there would have been things he would have been disgusted with.

“Anyway, he must have kept with us to give us the final push.”

“Mickey would have been a huge believer in not going past occasions like that without rememberin­g,” says Coney.“he would have brought up things that would have happened and that obviously had a huge bearing on Tyrone.
