SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND GOAL BONUS

- KIERAN CUNNINGHAM

HURLING scoring rates have soared but in terms of points, not goals.

And Clare legend Anthony Daly feels raising the value of a goal to four points would encourage more players to go for green flags.

“Maybe you could bring it in that the second goal would be worth four points. Any subsequent goal is worth four points,” he said.

“It might be an interesting way for a team to push on and keep going for goals and keep trying to create goal chances. You look at the difference in soccer now when you get three points for a win.

Ground

“Teams were going away from home and playing for a draw. They were quite happy, they weren’t losing much ground.

“I think the goal is a hugely exciting part of our games, the thing that gets the stadium rocking. I’d go with this. I’d trial it in next year’s League. There’s a lot of merit in it.”

ANTHONY JOSHUA taking on a big fight in Tottenham may bring back memories from his teenage years.

Tonight the Watford-born warrior will face Oleksandr Usyk in a battle for the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles in front of 60,000 fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But just over a decade ago, the now 31-year-old heavyweight champion was facing fights just a mile down the road in the Opera Nightclub, where Danny Dyer was once special guest DJ.

AJ would often frequent the club with his amateur team-mates from Finchley & District Boxing Club because one of their coaches worked the door and they knew they would get in.

“When we were boxing, we would train Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we would all go out on the weekend,” said Joshua.

“We are all boxers — you can’t really fight us. There were 10 of us going out.

“We would get in and if we would get into a fight, the bouncer is going to sling them out anyway and then he is going tell us where they are.

Corner

“He’d say, ‘They’re round the corner, there’s one of them walking down there’. We was always on top.

“So, yeah, Opera House, due to the fact we knew a bouncer there.
