Call to re-label porn of children

- ■ ■Alison O’REILLY

A RAPE survivor has called on the government to drop the words “child pornography” in law, saying that it is “too weak” to reflect the sick level of the crime.

Shaneda Daly (46) waived her right to anonymity in 2011 when her father Harry Daly, a former prison officer, was convicted of the highest rape charges in the state.

She now runs the online support group Survivors Side By Side for rape and sexual abuse survivors.

This week, Shaneda launched a campaign urging the government to follow other jurisdictions, by changing the words “child pornography” in law to “child sexual abuse images”.

Weak

Speaking to The Star, Shaneda said: “There are all sorts of pornography now, alien pornography, gay pornography, adult pornography, it’s not acceptable anymore to say ‘child pornography’.

“These are images of sexual abuse, they are criminal, they are weak words, they are not adequate, and they don’t describe a crime.”

Shaneda will deliver her public petition to Justice Minister Heather Humphreys.
