LUKAKU SETS OUT HIS GOALS

- ■ ■David ANDERSON

ROMELU Lukaku says he is more interested in trophies than caps and goal records.

The Chelsea striker made his 100th appearance for Belgium last month against the Czech Republic and is his country’s all-time top scorer with 67 goals.

Yet Lukaku’s focus is on winning a major tournament and he is conscious Belgium’s golden generation have yet to deliver.

Third place at the last World Cup has been their best finish and he feels success in the UEFA Nations League could help them triumph at next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Belgium face France in Turin in tonight’s second semi-final and Lukaku said: “One hundred caps is something you really strive to achieve as a young player.

“In the end, the ultimate goal remains to win and that’s my motivation. Every time I play for the national team, I want to win, and to win a tournament.

“In recent years, we have always managed to have a good start at tournaments and the expectations were always high.

Deliver

“In 2016, we didn’t deliver, it was very hard. During the World Cup in Russia we did quite well, but I think now in the Nations League, we must do really well, so that we can peak at the next World Cup.”

Lukaku (28) claims he has stopped counting how many times he has scored for Belgium.

“I didn’t really begin scoring goals straight away for the national team,” he said. “It took me some time but once I had settled in, I knew I would have opportunities to score and that the other players would enable me to do so.

“At some point, I stopped counting and just continued playing. We also won our matches and that was the great achievement, you know, scoring and winning.

“In the end you really just want to win a trophy and that’s what truly motivates me.”
