Navalny on prize shortlist

-

TRIBUTES last night poured in for a young Irish dad- of-two who died in a farming accident tragedy.

Tommy Feeney passed away after the incident in the Corkishbane area of Castleblaney, Monaghan on Tuesday.

Tommy, who was originally from Ardara in Co Donegal has been hailed for his “smile and quick wit” by his local GAA team in the town. CLG Ard an Ratha wrote on Facebook: “Tragic news reached the Parish yesterday as the word filtered through that Tommy Feeney had lost his life in an accident near his home in Monaghan.

Talent

“Tommy was a hugely popular lad growing up in Ardara and had a smile and a quick wit that endeared him to all who were lucky enough to know him.

“On the field in the green and gold, Tommy always left everything on the pitch and was a talented half back who was as tough as nails and was always one of the mainstays of each under-age team he played on.”

And Tommy’s heartbroken family have confirmed that the popular dad will be laid to rest after a funeral mass on Saturday in Corduff.

IMPRISONED Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and a group of Afghan women are on the shortlist to win the European Union’s top human rights prize.

Completing the trio of final nominees for the Sakharov Prize is imprisoned Bolivian politician and former interim president Jeanine Anez.

The winner of the €50,000 prize will be announced next week.

Mr Navalny, a foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was imprisoned this year after returning to Russia from Germany, where he had been recuperating from nerve agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin.
