Gambler beats jail for theft

TWO people have tragically lost their lives on Irish roads.

A man in his 40s died following a horror crash in Co Clare.

A jeep towing a trailer was involved in the crash at around 2.10pm on the N18 in Bunratty.

Gardai said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem will take place at a later date.

Investigat­ing Gardai have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

And on Thursday evening, a motorcycli­st died in a collision in Co Dublin.

The man, aged in his 20s, was involved in a two-vehicle crash between a car and a motorbike.

Gardai and emergency services attended the scene on the R136 in Lucan at around 8.25pm.

The man was taken to Connolly Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A MAN who engaged in an online sexual conversati­on with a child before he was caught with naked images of the boy on his laptop has been jailed for 20 months.

Amit Chawla (40) was found guilty by a jury of two counts of possessing child abuse imagery at his home in Rutland Place, Dublin on dates in August 2016 following a Circuit Criminal Court trial in June this year.

Chawla does not accept the verdict of the jury and plans to appeal, his sentence hearing was told yesterday. He was arrested and charged in 2018.

A FATHER-of-two who stole over €26,000 from his employer Lidl to feed a gambling addiction has received a fully suspended sentence.

Marcin Konar (43) with an address at Mill Park, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to the theft of €26,600 at Lidl, Thomas Street after he walked into a garda station and said he wished to confess, in 2018.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that he was not under the suspicion of his employer when he confessed to the crime.
