TANAISTE POT IS CALLING THE TORY KETTLE BLACK

-

LEO Varadkar lashed into the Brits last week over their refusal to honour the Northern Ireland Protocol.

They just can’t be trusted, he warned the world’s governments.

“You shouldn’t make any agreement with them until such a time you’re confident they will keep their promises and honour things, for example, like the protocol,” the Tánaiste trumpeted.

And he’s absolutely right of course.

But it’s a bit rich hearing an Irish politician warning the world about not trusting the Brits “until such a time you’re confident they will keep their promises and honour things” — when we have the greatest trust-busters on the planet in Dail Eireann.

How many million times have we heard solemn promises from our politicians — that turned out to be just as worthless as Boris Johnson’s word of honour?

Like Enda Kenny’s pre- election vow not to close the A& E at Roscommon Hospital. He closed it.

Or his pledge not to take money away from the disabled — which he tried to do until the magnificent Joanne O’Riordan produced video evidence of Kenny making his promise to her.

And then there was Leo’s 2016 election pledge to scrap the USC. It’s still here.

Or his 2011 election commitment:

Also in the 2011 General Election Tesco- style ad — “Fine Gael; Every Little Hurts” — the Labour Party swore it would prevent the Blueshirts reducing Child Benefit. But one of the first things that Minister Joan Burton did was to chop Child Benefit.

But the biggest betrayal was Ruairi Quinn’s hand- on- heart Oscar-winning oath to students not to raise third-level fees. Heevensignedabig pledge outside Trinity College committing Labour to guarantee no“newformof third lev el f ees including student loans, g raduate taxes and any further increase in the Student Contribution.”

Less than a hundred days later, there he was, hiking fees like a man possessed. Boris Johnson is a bone fide, dyed-in- the- DNA, leader- of-the-pack, Olympic Gold Medal, world class shameless liar.

Even the DUP — whom he lied to in 2018 about never putting a border down the Irish Sea — admit that.

But Irish politicians blasting him for not ke eping his promises? That’s what’s called real highclass, heavy-weight hypocrisy.
