Laura Colgan WE’RE REAL-ED IN BY TRASH TV Reality shows just bit of fun

-

REALITY TV is strangely named.

There is nothing real about it, and that’s coming from a self-confessed TV addict.

I would say it is a guilty pleasure except there’s no shame in taking enjoyment from TV shows made to be feasted on by the masses.

The drama and antics of the people looking for their five minutes of fame makes for good telly.

And, let’s face it, there wasn’t much else to enjoy with nothing going on in our ordinary lives over the past two years.

I know more about the Kardashian family tree than I do about my own.

Rows

I can recall who said what during the rows amongst the Housewives or Married at First Sight singletons.

And I have an hour free every evening now that Love Island has finished with no recollection of what I did with that time previously. The return of Big Brother might fill that void. Useless knowledge but time I enjoyed wasting by tuning into these shows wasn’t wasted.

I know these reality shows are detached from reality. They’re gameshows set in an alternate universe. Going on an all-exclusive holiday to find the love of your life through games and public voting doesn’t happen like it does on Love Island.

Money

People from all walks of life don’t come together to share a bedroom for prize money in any setting other than Big Brother. Singletons don’t commit to someone they’ve never met like on Married At First Sight. And people don’t view, let alone buy, the multi-million homes listed on Selling Sunset. There’s nothing real about reality TV.

We all really know that. And still really enjoy them.
