also tried to kill him.

Carey was previously arrested a number of times but was only imprisoned once for 15 months in 2002 when he pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Court to drug dealing.

His brother was Darren Carey (20) who was killed along the Grand

Canal in Co Kildare 22 years ago along with

GANG’S GRUDGE: Rattigan

Patrick Murray (19).

The chief suspect for that killing was the brute Mark ‘Guinea Pig’ Desmond (41) who himself was murdered in Lucan, Dublin in December 2016.

Witnesses

Gardai are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the murder. A spokesman added: “They are particularly appealing to road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the South Circular Road in the Kilmainham area on the morning of Friday June 24, 2022, to make it available to them.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact the incident room at Kilmainham Garda Station on 01 666 9700, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station,” the spokesman added.

A LARGE number of prisoners were forcibly removed from Mountjoy Prison after a violent protest by over 40 inmates.

They wrecked several cells, removing sinks and breaking televisions, last Thursday afternoon when they were refused access to their landing area because of a shortage of staff.

There has been heightened tension all week in Mountjoy following the murder of a 34-year-old prisoner, Robert O’Connor.

It is understood the staff shortage was caused by a number being on annual leave — while staff who witnessed and tried to stop the vicious attack by four other prisoners on O’Connor are also on leave with suspected post traumatic stress disorder.

The incident happened in the

Delta 2, D wing of the prison.

Landing

Between 40 to 45 inmates housed there then started wrecking the cells after they were informed they would not be let out into the landings.

Squads of prison officers then went in and forcibly removed up to 20 different individual prisoners involved in the trouble.

They were then put into separate prison vehicles and moved to other jails around the country.

A prison source said: “The inmates in the wing flipped when they heard they had not been given access to the landing.

“We don’t know whether the protest was premeditated or just a reaction. It started in one cell and spread to the rest.”

The Irish Prison Service confirmed a disturbance took place in Mointjoy last Thursday afternoon.
