CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TOPS FODEN’S HIT LIST

- ■■Jeremy CROSS

PHIL FODEN only turned 22 at the start of this summer but already has a CV to die for.

The England and Manchester City ace has landed 11 major trophies in a stellar career so far that promises to leave him polishing countless more by the time he hangs up his boots.

These include four Premier League titles in five seasons and four League Cups on the spin.

It feels mind-boggling to consider how much Foden has already achieved. But even future greats cannot have everything and he is quick to acknowledge there is still one piece of silverware missing from his collection.

Hoodoo

Conquering Europe has continued to evade Foden and his City teammates following a litany of heartbreak and hard-luck stories in club football’s elite competition.

And Foden admits that whatever happens this season, Pep Guardiola’s men are on a serious mission to bring an end to their Champions League hoodoo.

Foden said: “It felt very special and lucky at the same time (winning the title last season). Being only 22 years of age and already having four titles, you don’t really hear about anyone doing that.

“I feel very fortunate to play in such a great team and they have all helped me a lot to achieve these things.

Hungry

“We want to show the fans that we are always hungry to win. Not just me, but we are all motivated to try to win titles again this year.

“The goals for the team, we go for every competition. I can’t really say win them all, because that is hard to do.

“But if we can get the Champions League, that is the aim this year. We really want to win that. We have been so close.

“Individually, I want to try to score more goals than last season, get better stats and try to improve my game.”

City will kick off their Premier League defence at West Ham tomorrow without some key figures who have helped them establish such domestic dominance, including Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus.

Sterling and Jesus have been sold to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, but Foden is more focused on teaming up with the club’s new arrivals, not least Erling Haaland.

Fit

Haaland joined City from Borussia Dortmund in a €60m deal and is expected to take English football by storm.

Foden believes Haaland will be the prefect fit for Guardiola’s side and he added: “We lost some key players, but we have signed some great ones as well.

“We’ve been lacking that type of striker for the past few seasons, so he (Haaland) is definitely going to help us this season with his work rate. He is powerful and he dominates defenders — and that is just what we need up front.”
