Woman who lost family in tragedy gives nod to support

-

A WOMAN who lost her two children and husband in a car tragedy revealed she was “lost for words” at the support she has received, just days before the anniversary of their death.

Geraldine Mullan’s six-year-old daughter Amelia, son Tomas (14), and husband John (49) drowned after the family car plunged into Lough Foyle at Quigley’s Point in Co Donegal on August 20, 2020.

Geraldine (47), who survived by standing on top of the vehicle before being rescued, will on Friday open a “field of hope” near the crash site to the public for the anniversary this weekend.

Lost

And as the The Star revealed last week, she has planted two acres of sunflowers, which were her daughter Amelia’s favourite flower.

She has now thanked the farmer who helped to make it possible and said yesterday: “How do you put into words your expression of thanks, gratitude and admiration?

“It’s not often I’m lost for words, but on this occasion I am.”

Local farmer John McCarron, who normally grows barley in the field between the R238 and Lough Foyle, agreed this year to plant sunflower seeds instead.

Heart

It allowed Geraldine to grieve through her project in memory of John, Tomas and Amelia.

Geraldine, who is an oncology nurse, said: “John McCarron, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“Being a farmer’s daughter myself, I know the love and commitment you give to the land.”

She added that his “taking a step into the unknown” required “extreme courage”.

The Field of Hope is open from 12pm-5pm from Friday to Sunday.
