COROEBUS IS A HUGE LOSS

- ■■Jason HEAVEY

DREAM RUN: Author’s Dream in action at York evening, I considered putting up course specialist Another Angel, but while Antony Brittain’s gelding has a big chance on his best course form, he has a moderate record after a break (978729 after eight weeks or more out).

My reference therefore is for the Stella Barclay-trained BASHOLO (8:30, Nap), who looks a big price on the back of a forgivable effort on soft ground at Hamilton.

Basholo showed immediate improvement for the switch to Barclay from Brian Meehan, third at Carlisle when produced to lead two furlongs out and gave the impression the stiff finish found her out.

She built on that when dropped to 5f at Leicester on her next start, scoring bravely in a three-way finish despite being carried left by the runner-up.

She was probably unsuited by conditions after a break at Hamilton on her latest start, but being restrained leaving the stalls sealed her fate and that is a run to ignore.

She is yet to race at Newcastle — or on Tapeta for that matter — but as a daughter of Caravaggio, she is bred to relish the surface.

To demonstrate, Caravaggio’s offspring have a record of just 8-99 on ground softer than good in the UK and Ireland, but his record on Tapeta is 7-36.

She may still be open to improvement given her profile, and following Stella Barclay at Newcastle is a profitable ploy, with the yard’s runners winning almost twice as often as the market would suggest.

DREAMLOPER returned to France to double her Group One tally in the Prix du Moulin, but the race was blighted by the death of 2,000 Guineas winner Coroebus.

Ed Walker’s mare, whose top-level breakthrough had come in the Prix d’Ispahan in the French capital in May, came to challenge leader God Blessing running to the final furlong of the one-mile contest, just as William Buick and the Charlie Applebytrained Coroebus (right) made the same move wider on the track.

But the Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes hero crashed to the ground as the result of a fatal leg injury, leaving Dreamloper and Kieran Shoemark to beat Order Of

Australia by five and a half lengths.

“She’s an eight or nine-furlong horse and we would love to have a go at the Filly & Mare Breeders’ Cup race [at Keeneland on November 5],” said Walker.

Appleby said of Coroebus: “It’s very sad to see a great horse, who gave so much to racing, lose his life in this way.” Buick escaped injury. Frankie Dettori, meanwhile, will partner Haskoy in the Cazoo St Leger with the filly due to be supplemented for the final Classic of the season. The daughter of Golden Horn, who is trained by Ralph Beckett, was an impressive seven-length winner on debut at Wolver hampton in July and then struck at Listed level in the Galtres Stakes at York the following month.

Bred

Beckett and the Juddmonte operation, who own and bred the bay, have jointly decided to throw her hat into the ring for the Leger and will turn to Dettori to do the steering at Doncaster.

Dettori was in action at Baden-Baden yesterday, finishing second in the Grosser Preis von Baden aboard Torquator Tasso and received a 14-day suspension for his use of the whip, from September 18 to October 1, inclusive.
