Soaring bills inspire unusual promotion

-

PUNTERS who chill in their coats in a Dublin pub will get a 20 per cent discount on food.

Bosses at Doyles Corner pub have announced they will not turn the heating on on Tuesdays to save on energy bills.

The rising price of coal on the chronic cost of their bills is the inspiration behind the idea.

The well-known watering hole in Phibsborough has encouraged pubgoers to bring their coat with them and will leave the heating off for every Tuesday in October.

The pub’s coowner Ronan

Flood said: “Doyles

Corner is a big listed building and it is really difficult to heat.

“This is a promotion in which we are inviting our guests to ‘chill with us every Tuesday’ as we turn the heat down a little.

“In return for bringing your own coat, we are offering a 20 per cent discount on the food bill.”

Mr Flood said he expects to see the pub packed full of punters on Tuesday night thanks to the novel idea.

He said: “We turned the heating on for the first time this week and a little piece of me died.

“I would imagine we’ll still get it up to a relatively comfortable 17 or 18 degrees without too much bother.

“The reaction is quite strong at the moment and the bookings are coming in.

“It’s generating a bit of advertisement for the bar so who knows what’s around the corner when it comes into November.”

Bills

Mr Flood said the bar’s electricity bills were around €1,500 per month while gas bills were also €1,500 per month before the recent price hikes.

He said: “Our electricity and gas bills have tripled in price compared to 2019.

“Between this bar and our sister bar Oscar’s in Smithfield, we’re at a €52,000 increase this year to date.

“We expect that to rise.”
