COMEDIAN Tommy Tiernan has admitted he was “wildly egocentric, greedy and ambitious” in the past.

But now the Navan man (53) says he is “more relaxed” after taking up daily meditation.

The chat king — whose Tommy Tiernan Show is one of the most popular on telly — spoke as he’s back on the road with his sellout stand-up show Tomfoolery.

In a revealing interview, he told RTE 2FM’s Aifric O’Connell yesterday how work pressures used to get on top of him.

“I’ve been depressed and angry and felt as if the world was on my shoulders.

“I’ve been turned upside down a few times as well by stuff that’s happened in work and gone through strange and very unpleasant stresses.”

He said he felt his career at the moment is ”a time of bounty” saying: “A few things I’ve been doing have gone well, and the rewards of that are flowing.”

The stand-up, presenter, actor and podcaster said “restlessness” was part of his DNA but daily meditation is helping that.

“I’m meditating a lot these days. I stare at a wall for half an hour and I’ve noticed it has an effect down the line.”

The Navan comedian joked: “So you’re doing it for a couple of months and you notice: I’m a bit more relaxed.”

Feeling

He continued: “I’ve realised not to look towards my work for happiness and almost to try and cultivate a feeling of ‘I wonder what the day will bring?’”

Dad-of six Tiernan – who is married to Yvonne McMahon — told how he feels most at home out in the wilds of Connemara, at home with his family and on stage.

“I feel at home in my home as well with my wife and family and I feel loved and loving there.”

Tommy spoke about his love for Galway and the west.

“I love the changeability of the weather in Galway and the water. The weather in Galway has ADHD and I think I have a touch of it as well so we complement each other.”

Tommy Tiernan’s show Tomfoolery is Live At The Marquee in Cork on June 8 and 15.
