Air we go for another cut...

ENERGY FIRM LATEST TO SLASH COSTS

- ■■Ferghal BLANEY

SSE Airtricity has become the latest utility company to slash energy prices following competitors Electric Ireland, Energia and Pinergy’s moves.

The company says that it will see their dual account customers enjoy a discount of €385 over the coming year.

However, Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe said the cuts from energy firms so far have to be “only the start” of price reductions for cash-strapped consumers.

Speaking to reporters at Ballybough Community Centre at a policing plan launch, Mr Donohoe said: “The reductions announced at the moment are welcome, but they have to only be the start.

“Prices went up by a very significant amount over the last 22 months and the announcement that we are hearing today should be the beginning of the journey.

“When we see that energy prices across the world have stabilised or fallen, it’s imperative that their full benefits are passed on to Irish households and businesses.

“So I welcome it, but it has to only be the beginning.”

SSE Airtricity’s announcement will see a 12 per cent decrease in the standard unit rate for electricity and a 10 per cent decrease in the standard unit rate for gas.

The price reductions will see a typical dual fuel customer save €384.55 (including VAT) per year.

All domestic Republic of Ireland gas and electricity customers will automatically have the reduced rate applied to their bills.

Winter

Klair Neenan, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, said: “We hope today’s announcement will be welcome news for households as we approach winter.

“We’re acutely aware of the pressure people have been experiencing with the cost-of-living crisis and we recognise that this continues to be a difficult time for many.

“We recognise that volatility has impacted customers over the past number of years, and we want to provide price certainty for customers who want to manage their energy costs.”
