Ukrainian officials have urged other countries not to recognise the results of the vote, which the Foreign Ministry called “fake elections”.

For Russia it is important to go on with the voting to maintain the illusion of normalcy, despite the fact that the Kremlin does not have full control over the annexed regions, political analyst Abbas Gallyamov said.

“The Russian authorities are trying hard to pretend everything is going according to plan, everything is fine. And if everything is going according to plan, then the political process should go according to plan,” said Gallyamov.

He added that Russian authorities will not get “anything good in terms of boosting their legitimacy” in the occupied regions.

COMEDIAN Stephen Fry has a laugh and a joke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a visit to war-torn Ukraine, and declared the President “my new bestie”.

The 66-year-old star was in Kyiv hosting a summit on mental health organised by Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine.

He posted pictures of his meeting with the President, a former comic and actor, and wrote: “We had a terrific talk. I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few world leaders in my time, but none with whom I’ve felt such an instant connection.

“I do not envy the weight of responsibility on his shoulders and a workload that would fell an ox.”

Speaking about the mental health summit, Stephen said: “Huge credit to Ukraine for understanding there is strength, not weakness, in acknowledging and addressing the mental health challenges that war brings.”

Shelter

Stephen sheltered in the basement of his Kyiv hotel amid an air raid on Wednesday.

He posted pictures of the shelter and wrote: “People laughing and chattering quite happily.”

His visit came as Russia fired cruise missiles at Kyiv in the first aerial attack on the capital since August 30.
