“Early Alzheimer’s there is definitely a family component but ordinary Alzheimer’s, there is no genetic component that they have discovered.”

The ex-RTE presenter was speaking as he helped launch Alzheimer’s Tea Day, which kicks off on May 2.

Heart

The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland is a charity that has always been close to his heart.

In 2010, Pat opened up about his mother’s struggle with the disease.

“She lived with Alzheimer’s for 14 years.

“My mother stayed at home for much of that time. What had been keeping her going was being in her own home,” he said at the time.

Over 30 years, Tea Day has raised €10m to help support people living with dementia across Ireland, along with their families and carers.

RTE viewers were left confused on Sunday after the advertised episode of Keys To My Life was not shown, with another aired in its place.

Former Tanaiste Joan Burton had been due to feature in a heavily promoted episode in which she recalled her early years in a mother and baby home.

Some viewers on Sunday night were left confused as homeless charity founder Fr Peter McVerry was instead the subject of the night.

A spokesman for RTE said: “The Joan Burton episode of Keys to My Life will air next Sunday”.

Throughout the episode, presenter Brendan brought the audience through the life of the beloved Fr Peter McVerry, walking us through his background in chemistry, becoming a priest and setting up a hostel for the homeless in Dublin.

But viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to ask what had happened.

Tape

SEAN Cox had an emotional reunion with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp just minutes after the Reds beat Brighton on Sunday.

The Meath man was left with life-changing brain injuries after an unprovoked attack before the Champions League semi-final against AS Roma at Anfield in 2018.

After the assault, Sean was in a coma for six weeks at Walton Neurological Centre.

Following Sunday’s clash, Klopp met with the dad-of-three, his wife Martina, and carer Eustina in the tunnel.

In a video posted to X, the Liverpool boss walks towards Sean, who is sitting in his wheelchair, but his wife says “he’s going to stand up for you”.

Aided by his family, Sean stood and shared a heartfelt embrace with Klopp, saying “Unbelievable”.

The pair embrace and Klopp whispers something to Sean.

It was likely his last time meeting Sean before he steps down as Liverpool boss at the end of the season.

The three men jailed over the attack have all been released.

“What happened to the advertised episode,” asked one viewer.

Another joked: “Reckon someone in #RTE pressed the wrong button tonight or Joan Burton has changed a lot.”

“Looks like @RTEOne put the wrong tape in cos it’s Peter McVerry tonight,” another pointed out.

Another said: “Where’s Joan? It’s showing Peter McVerry?”

“It’s Peter mc Verry ! Where’s Joan,” another said.

“Very disappointed, thought this was on tonight, gone back on the player and can’t find it either!!” another complained.

In the episode on Sunday night, Brendan and Peter visited the first hostel Peter ever opened up, as he explained: “In 1979, we got this house and we opened it up as a small hostel. This is where it all began.”
