Double’s still within reach says Gabriel PREMIER LEAGUE

- ■■Jeremy CROSS

GABRIEL Jesus is still dreaming of helping Arsenal land an historic double this season.

Mikel Arteta’s men held champions Manchester City to a goalless draw at the Etihad to remain in the thick of the title race.

Arsenal are two points behind league leaders Liverpool with nine games to go, and have also reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Gunners have never won the European Cup — and have not been crowned English champions in two decades.

But Jesus sees no reason why Arsenal cannot get their hands on the biggest trophies come the end of the season.

“It’s the Premier League.

It’s a tough league and anything can happen,” said the Brazilian forward.

Counts

“It is only two points the difference (with Liverpool), but we have a very good goal difference. Everything counts at the end, and there are still a lot of games.

“We also have the Champions League. This is the most beautiful part of the season, and you try everything to win titles.”

Arsenal have been criticised for their negative tactics at the Etihad to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side.

But Jesus reckons Arteta’s men did what they had to do to avoid defeat — and showed how much they’ve matured in the last 12 months.

Arsenal were thrashed 4-1 in the same fixture last season as City charged to a third title on the spin.

“To play big games, you have to sometimes change your body language,” said Jesus.

“To go there and play against them is not easy. We tried to win, and I think we could have won it.

“Maybe we played a different game to what we normally do, but sometimes football is like this. Each game is different.

“We had some chances. We could have scored and maybe win the game, but that’s football. We take the point.

“We went there last season and we suffered a lot. We conceded goals and then we

made some mistakes.

“This time it was a bit different. We knew from the start that, at some point, we had to suffer a little bit (playing) deep.

“They are a team who love the ball, we do as well, but sometimes it is difficult.”

Jesus was signed from City in a €52m deal in 2022 to score goals — and he has done.

But on Sunday he spent most of his time defending against his former club and admits he would do whatever is asked of him to help the team succeed.

“The way I am, I try everything I can to help my team,” he explained.

“It doesn’t matter where I play, I always try to do my best. And here, I did it.

“I was very deep. Normally I am not that deep, but I had to play as the winger, and I think I helped my team playing like this.

“But the most important thing, is sometimes if you cannot win, you do not lose.”
