An Garda Siochana is currently seeking tenders for the supply of up to 200 new mountain bikes, which it estimates will cost €250,000 excluding VAT. An initial order for 100 bicycles is expected to be submitted within 30 days of a contract being signed, followed by two further purchase orders for 50 bikes, if required.

In 2019, it was reported that An Garda Siochana had spent nearly €72,000 repairing bikes over the previous five years. Another €626,108 had been spent on bicycle clothing, while €11,237 was paid for decals. Last August, eight e-bikes were purchased, with six rolled out in a pilot scheme at Pearse and Store Street Garda Stations in Dublin.

FORTY-SIX years after a Missouri hunter found a body in the Mississippi River, the victim has been identified as a 15-yearold girl from Iowa.

Authorities in Missouri announced that DNA evidence and other scientific investigation were key in determining the body was that of Helen Renee Groomes, who disappeared from Ottumwa, Iowa.

Her body was found in the river near Elsberry, Missouri, in March 1978.

TRIBUTES have been paid to the Croatian man who died yesterday — five days after he was brutally attacked as he walked home.

The victim, named by sources as Josip Strok had been on life support in Tallaght Hospital following the attack in Clondalkin, Co Dublin Saturday evening — but lost his fight for life yesterday.

“He was a lovely man and a really hard worker,” one pal told The Star last night.

“Rest in peace Josip,” another friend said.

Mr Strok, who was in his 30s and from Krapina in Croatia, is believed to have lived in Ireland for several years.

We have established that he and a friend had been socialising in Temple Bar in central Dublin earlier on Saturday and were making their way home when the incident happened.

It is understood the pair had an altercation close to a bus stop on Tower Road in Clondalkin at around 9.45pm — before they got on a bus.

They then got off on St. Cuthbert’s Road and headed towards the Grange View Road area.

But they were attacked by four men — and both were injured.

Mr Strok suffered serious head injuries, while his pal was less seriously hurt. A post mortem is due today.

A full investigation was underway last night.

A Garda spokesman appealed for witnesses.
