THE RIPLEY EFFECT

Director hails Talented Mr Scott

ANDREW Scott has spoken about the difficulties of playing anti-hero conman and killer Tom Ripley as the LA premiere of the new Netflix series took place.

“Like with any sort of iconic literary character like that, people have very strong opinions — he’s a psychopath, he’s a serial killer,” said Scott. “Part of the challenge was how do you make an audience feel like what it’s like to be Tom Ripley, rather than what is usually done, which is to want to feel like to be a victim of Tom Ripley.”

Scott, known for his stage work, the Emmy-winning Fleabag and recent film All of Us Strangers, says it may take some viewers raised on TikTok a little while to adjust to a more sedate, deliberate storytelling pace — one in which charac

RTE star Laura Fox has revealed she put her back out while “taking off her jacket too quickly”.

The Dancing With The Stars finalist has been left with the severe back injury weeks after the show ended.

She told her Instagram followers: “I did four months of Dancing with the Stars, training, intensely, seven days a week for four months straight.

“And not one injury. And then I took my jacket off too quickly right before I went on air ters climb staircases, look at waves and make small talk.

“There is time to watch where an ashtray is bought before it’s later used to bludgeon someone to death.

“You have to teach the audience how to watch it on Saturday morning and I put my whole f***ing back out.

“Now I do think that I might have hurt myself when I went to the gym last Wednesday, that I slightly tweaked it. But I was like, ‘ooh, it’s a little bit sore but it’s fine’.

“I took my coat off too fast and I was like, ‘ooooh, it felt like I was being stabbed in the back’, so that if you were listening to the show on you would have noticed it.

“And then, every so often, I’d be laughing and I felt like my lung was about to collapse and I had to go straight to a song.” to a certain degree,” he says. “There’s certain times the pacing is quite fast and times where you think this would take time and you have to stay with the agony and the thrill and the tension when things aren’t going right. That’s the way life is.”

Director Steven Zaillian thought of Scott for the role early in the casting process, aware of his work in Fleabag and as Moriarty on the BBC series Sherlock. He was smitten.

“I just found him watchable,” Zaillian says. “I knew that since we spend so much time with somebody alone — that he has to be watchable.

“To see him think and express himself in a way that lets us know what he’s thinking. And Andrew was able to do that.”
