SENT FOR TRIAL OVER ‘MMA ATTACK’
A MAN has been sent forward for trial charged with attacking and injuring another player with a “mixed martial arts move” during a football match.
Cormac Goodman (28) of the Paddocks, Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin, is accused of assault causing harm to a named male on September 4, 2022 at Na Fianna GAA club in Glasnevin, Dublin.
He was served with a book of evidence at Dublin District Court yesterday.
Judge Cephas Power granted a return for trial order, sending him forward to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where the case will be listed on May 2 for mention.
The DPP directed that the case be heard in the jurisdiction of the District Court.
However, after gardai furnished medical evidence about the expected recovery time, a judge held that the case should be dealth with at the higher level.
The judge had described it as a severe joint injury, particularly in a young athletic individual.
Fracture
The complainant suffered a fracture to the lateral tibial plateau.
Defence solicitor Brian Tunney has said the defendant, who worked previously in logistics pleads not guilty.
A preliminary hearing was told the injured party and the accused were involved in a football match together.
It was alleged Mr Goodman “put his legs around the injured party in what was described as a mixed martial arts move”.
“Both ended up falling on the ground,” the court sergeant had said when he summarised the prosecution evidence. The court heard there was kicking, and the complainant suffered a serious knee injury.
Mr McGuinness is suing the Garda Commissioner and the State over what he says was the unlawful search of his truck business premises at Pinnock Hill in Swords on August 23, 2014.
Attack
He claims the gardai wrongly associated him with the Quinn attacks and that information for the warrant was untrue.
Mr McGuinness claimed gardai caused damage to gates, seized documents and took envelopes containing £2,000 and €1,800.
He said: “I am not and never was my brother’s keeper and I am saying that is why I have been subjected to Garda harassment.”
The case continues before Mr Justice David Nolan.
