“Puberty blockers are prescribed in a very small number of cases and the recent NHS announceme­nt has not changed the approach in Ireland.”

They said Cass’s report will be reviewed as part of the ongoing work.

“Work will be informed by best evidence on clinical care for individual­s who express gender incongruen­ce or dysphoria and emerging and evolving internatio­nal evidence, including the just-published Cass report.”

The Cass report pointed to the lack of “good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventi­ons to manage gender-related distress”. Meanwhile, the HSE said last night it plans to study a British report recommendi­ng further restrictio­ns on puberty blockers for teenage children.

Health chiefs said the document will be examined as part of the developmen­t of a new clinical programme for gender healthcare over the next two years

The HSE said while its programme is being worked on, patients will continue to be treated by the endocrinol­ogy service in adult and paediatric centres in the Ireland East Hospital Group and Children’s Health Ireland.
