‘Dory’ makes memos for memory loss

SHIPPED FOR 36 HOURS MINUS FOOD

A DUTCH Minister has taken aim at Ireland’s live export of unweaned calves to the Netherlands — saying it’s “important.. there are clear rules for watering and feeding”.

The has reported extensively how Irish calves — some just 14 days old — go without food on journeys up to 36 hours over land and sea.

Dutch Agriculture Minister, Piet Adema, told his parliament the increased trade to their country in 2023 doesn’t fit with his commitments and that he supports a ban on transporting young animals for more than eight hours.

But his hands are tied because of EU rules on the movement of goods so the issue “must be addressed EU-wide”.

Minister Adema added that he has asked the European Commission to initiate infringement proceedings against Ireland over the transports.

In reply, Irish MEP Billy Kelleher later wrote to Ireland’s Agriculture, Food and the

Marine minister, Charlie McConalogue outlining “deep concerns” about the debate for Ireland and suggested he contact the Dutch minister.

But Mr Kelleher has now come under fire from Ethical Farming Ireland.

Its director Caroline Rowley said: “It is concerning that an Irish MEP is trying to influence government policy in another member state, a government rightly concerned about the welfare of Irish calves during transit to the Netherlands.

“Unweaned calves must endure 29–36 hours with no feed.

“The current Regulation states that calves must be fed after 9 hours if necessary and after a maximum of 19 hours.” Mr Kelleher said: “We have proposed as part of the conditions to improve welfare, to look at feeding.” And he added that he believes the age of animals being exported should be increased from 14 days to 28 days.

A WOMAN with memory loss makes memos on everyone in her life so she can remember details about them - and has been nicknamed Dory by her friends.

Megan Mackenzie (27) suffered a traumatic brain injury after she fell off a stage in school and hit the back of her head.

She had to relearn to talk without a stutter and over time realised she was struggling with short and long-term memory loss.

Megan, an actress from New York City, keeps a memo for every friend or family member in her notes app on her phone.
