JOY OF SIX Honor adds plenty of Magic to new phone

-

ALL hail the most eye-catching smartphone of 2024 so far — Honor Magic 6 Pro.

I’ve been testing it for more than a month now and I love its green vegan leather back and the way the circular camera mount sits into an almost square frame that blends in seamlessly with the phone.

It’s hoped this system will help users speed up their weekly chores whilst removing more muck from their

I’ve been using it without a protective cover as it would be a shame and a waste to hide that gorgeous frame. It comes in other colours too.

Around the front is a stunning gently curved AMOLED screen and on the sides is a beautifully polished frame. The display is pin sharp for every use - viewing videos, consuming media, browsing the web, gaming and productivity.

It’s got Netflix HDR certification too and it is super bright – technically the brightest smartphone on the market with its 5,000 nits of peak brightness.

The refresh rate is 120Hz so everything feels superfast.

A unique feature is Magic Portal which uses AI to guess your intent so you can perform an action faster.

What makes this device stand out is the main rear camera, a a 50MP wide angle lens with a large 1/1.3in sensor, a variable f/1.4 to f/2.0 aperture and optical image stabilisation.

It’s a superb shooter that coupled with the computational photography smarts delivers incredibly pleasing and sharp images that are well exposed, colourful and full of contrast.

The variable aperture means Magic 6 Pro is more adept at handling dark and bright environments, especially in video.

Selfie

On the front is an excellent 50MP selfie camera – one of the most impressive I’ve tested. Both rear and front cameras can capture pleasing video at up to 4K resolution. The microphones do a decent job too.

Magic 6 Pro is also one of the only Android phones to use 3D depth sensors to deliver face unlocking of a high enough standard for compliance with financial services.

The performance of the phone is superb – it’s armed with flagship-standard specs and breezes through everything you throw at it including graphically-intensive games. It runs Android 14 with Magic OS 8 on top.

Battery life is superb – the phone lasts all day every day – and you get support for 80w wired charging and 66w wireless.

The phone is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance, and you get 512GB storage. Verdict

Honor Magic 6 Pro ticks plenty of boxes in its bid to woo consumers away from the big two, Apple and Samsung. It costs €1299 but you get a top-tier camera system, huge amount of storage, great battery life, superfast charging, clever AI and a fantastic screen that’s brighter than the rest. On top of all that, the exquisite and unique design.
