Amond’s goals the real icing

- ■ ■Mark McCADDEN

WATERFORD boss Keith Long has hailed the influence of last week’s matchwinner Padraig Amond.

The 35-year-old former Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers and Newport County man has made a stunning return to League of Ireland football, scoring five goals in his first nine games to date.

He popped up with a clever goal in last weekend’s 1-0 win away to a Bohemians side managed by ex-Blues coach Alan Reynolds.

Amond had already notched against Drogheda United, Galway United and twice against St Patrick’s Athletic.

With the league likely to be more competitive than in recent seasons, a regular goalscorer could make all the difference.

Long said: “All the teams in this league can beat each other, with the exception of maybe one or two clubs that are a little ahead of others.

Points

“Teams are going to take points off each other.

“Padraig has worked ever so hard for the team. His runs and his work-rate, his total distance in terms of what he covers during games is outstanding for his age.

“At times he is back in our box, at times he is playing right-back, at times he chases, he harries, he harasses, and he is experienced.

“It was good improvisation from us in terms of the freekick by Robbie McCourt and Padraig is on-hand to score.”

The win last weekend against Bohs came after three defeats in four games.

While Waterford picked up three valuable points, tonight’s opponents Galway United sat out their game against Sligo Rovers, as it fell victim to Storm Kathleen.

They are looking to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat at home to Bohemians and leapfrog their hosts tonight, with just one place and one point separating the two.

Galway claimed a 2-1 win over Waterford in Eamonn Deacy Park on March 1.
