Wrexham on an ‘Ell of a rise
ELLIOTT LEE says he has hit his League One target with Wrexham a year ahead of schedule.
The Welsh club secured promotion with a 6-0 home win against Forest Green and the midfielder said: “It’s incredible. It’s why I joined the club in the first place.
“I signed a three-year deal initially and I said if I can be in League One at the end of it I’ll be incredibly happy.
“It’s good to know all the hard work over the last two years has paid off. We knew we could do it in this league. This is why we play the game.”
Wrexham shot out of the traps against Forest Green with Lee opening the scoring before Paul Mullin and an own-goal from Ryan Inniss made it three in 35 minutes.
Another Mullin goal before the interval plus two more from Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott in the second-half meant Mansfield’s 4-1 comeback victory over MK Dons and Barrow’s 3-0 capitulation to Gillingham confirmed promotion to the third tier.
Historic
Elliott admitted expectations are high in the squad after last season’s historic promotion celebrations saw Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney foot the bill for an all-expenses paid holiday to Las Vegas.
Fans stormed the pitch at full-time and former West Ham academy graduate Lee is hopeful that the celebrations don’t end there.
“I don’t know if they’ve messaged anyone yet,” when asked about his Hollywood co-owners. “We usually get a message from Ryan after a game so I’m sure he’ll message soon enough - they both will, to be fair.
“We’ve just told them to fire up the jet for Vegas!”
Lee has been a pivotal figure in Wrexham’s this season with 16 goals and four assists across 44 League Two appearances.
