ARCTIC foxes are forced to turn to cannibalism in one of the most shocking scenes ever filmed for a David Attenborough programme.
The desperate act is, Attenborough explains, a consequence of climate change and a lack of food for the animal, and “only time will tell” if the species can survive in the long term.

CHRISTIAN Brueckner befriended a mum in a chat room used by paedophiles and called her daughter cute, a court heard.
The woman testified yesterday in court in Germany, where Madeleine McCann suspect Brueckner is on trial for unrelated sex attacks in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
The woman said she met the German online in 2013. She said: “He wrote to me on a regular dating chat site.
“But I have since found it’s where many paedophiles and sick people operate.” On learning the woman had a daughter aged three, she said, he asked for pictures.
She said: “He just said he found her cute, and she could be a model.”
She said Brueckner there is open water when there should be ice. As food runs out for the Arctic fox living there, some turn to desperate measures in order to survive.”
In the latest episode of the six-part series Mammals, Attenborough will tell viewers: “Arctic foxes form unlikely alliances with the polar bears.
“It’s late in the year and both species are waiting for the sea to freeze.
“Once it does, polar bears will once again be able to hunt seals out on the ice and Arctic foxes will scavenge later spent time alone with her daughter when they went on dog walks. “He wasn’t threatening,” she added.
But Brueckner (47) was often drunk and would boast about burglaries while living in Portugal, she testified.
She said: “He said he went into houses where people were sleeping.

“He had tights over his head. I thought, ‘who does that?’”
One allegation against Brueckner dates to weeks before Madeleine vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, in May 2007. from their leftovers. But right now, both are hungry and both must wait.
“For the foxes the situation is becoming desperate.
“The wait for one Arctic fox has been too long. The starving survivors cannot ignore this opportunity. “Desperation has led to cannibalism, something seen more and more in the Arctic.” Other foxes then join in and even start fighting over the dead fox as “none are willing to surrender this meal”.
She was nine days from turning four. Brueckner is still serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of a pensioner in the Portuguese town in 2019.
In 2020 German authorities named him as the main suspect in the Madeleine case, which he denies.
His trial at Braunschweig regional court is due to last until October.
