Now, in a turn of events, the 77th blessing of the planes will continue because the chaplain of the Catholic Church at the airport, Fr Des Doyle, has undergone the same Garda security clearance process as daa employees who require airside access.

This enables him to be airside “to counsel passengers and employees as well as perform activities including the traditional blessing of the planes”.

In a statement yesterday morning, daa confirmed the traditional Christmas blessing of the planes will continue.

The daa also said:

“daa is aware that other groups are also interested in blessings. daa respects all faiths and provides a multi-faith prayer room in Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport.”

TWO men charged over a seizure of €8m of heroin allegedly flown into Dublin’s Weston Airport last year have been sent forward for trial.

The Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and the Revenue Customs Service used a light aircraft, intercepted a vehicle as part of an investigation, and arrested two men on December 1.

The plane was searched, and an estimated 60kg of heroin was allegedly found.

Aradi Ignac (49) of Kecskemet, Hungary and Zoltan Nemeth (62) Sukosd, Hungary, were charged with unlawful possession of heroin and possessing the seizure with intent to supply at Weston Airport.

The pair were also charged with possessing drugs worth €13,000 or more.

They were charged later with an additional offence of enhancing organised crime. Ignac was charged with money laundering for possessing over €3,720 in alleged crime proceeds.

They appeared again at Cloverhill District Court, where they were served with books of evidence.

Judge John O’Leary sent them forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where the case will be listed for mention on May 9.

They have not yet entered pleas to the charges and listened to the proceedings with the help of an interpreter.

Following a request from their barrister, Aisling Ginger-Quinn, legal aid was granted and senior counsel representation, due to the seriousness of the case.
