Rain or no reign for Lewis

- ■■Daniel MOXON

LEWIS HAMILTON is praying for more rain ahead of tomorrow’s Chinese Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion was second quickest in qualifying for today’s sprint race, trailing only compatriot Lando Norris.

The Britons flew while Max Verstappen and Red Bull were out of sorts in the changeable conditions in Shanghai.

But Hamilton admitted afterwards that without the rain Mercedes still do not have the pace to compete at the front.

He said: “I’m so happy. As soon as I saw the rain coming I got excited because in dry conditions we’re not quick enough.

“When the rain came in, I thought I’d have a better opportunity – and that’s when it all came together.”

On his chances in the sprint, Hamilton said:

“If it’s like that, maybe we’ll have a chance of being up there.

Venue

“But if it’s dry, naturally, the Ferraris and Red Bulls will come by. Maybe we can hold off some of the others.”

Meanwhile, the venue for this weekend’s action is under scrutiny on F1’s first visit to the Shanghai International Circuit since 2019.

Several drivers noted that the track itself has been “painted” with a treatment to keep the crumbling asphalt together.

Neither the teams nor tyre supplier Pirelli were informed and the new surface has had a negative impact on grip.

An unhappy Verstappen complained about the “incredibly slippery” surface and said the rain, combined with the treatment, made it feel like he was “driving on ice”.

A full resurfacing is planned before next year’s China race.

The running was interrupted twice by grass next to the circuit catching fire, despite the wet weather.

TV replays showed sparks flying off the cars appeared to be the cause.

But the circuit was built on a swamp and one theory is that gas may be present, which is acting as a catalyst.

The FIA is planning further inspections.
