Promotion built on team spirit

HARRY WINKS believes Leicester’s unbreakable bond has inspired them to be crowned champions on their instant return to the Premier League.

The Foxes secured promotion with two games to spare and thumped Preston 3-0 at Deepdale on Monday to make sure they would lift the Championship title.

A double from 37-year-old striker

Jamie Vardy and a second-half header from Kasey McAteer saw them home as the club equalled a 104-year record for most second-flight wins of 31.

Success

Midfielder Winks (inset) revealed a major key to their success.

“You could go through everybody, even the players who maybe haven’t played as many minutes.

“We’re a really tightknit group,” said Winks, a summer signing from Spurs. “Those players that haven’t played as much have been just as important to the team as the ones who have.

“In a long 40-odd game season it’s important to have good people and such a good squad – and we’ve got that in abundance.

“I’ve enjoyed the team bond with everybody, all the lads get on. And the style of play the manager wants is just perfect for me. I love the way we play.”

Winks’ arrival at the King Power Stadium on a three-year deal last July raised eyebrows among some Foxes fans, with many disillusioned after relegation.

“But Enzo Maresca recently revealed that “signing Harry was my priority” when he took over as manager.

Winks responded with a string of star showings to repay the Italian’s faith.

“Personally it’s been my best season as a player. I’ve loved every minute of it,” added Winks.

“I love the fans as well, they way they’ve taken to me and I’ve taken to them. It’s been a great year and a great bond.”
