This means that one in five recyclable containers were being rejected, leaving consumers out of pocket, allowing the company to retain the deposit, and resulting in bottles and cans ending up being dumped into a bin.

In an email to Minister Smyth seen by The Star, Re-turn CEO Ciaran Foley said vending machine suppliers were blaming consumers for getting their “fingers in the way” for “the vast majority” of the rejections by the vending machines.

THE US paused a shipment of bombs to Israel last week over concerns about a fullscale assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a senior White House official said.

The shipment was supposed to consist of 900kg and 225kg bombs, the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, added.

The Joe Biden administration feared the larger explosives could be used in a dense urban setting.

More than one million

IRELAND’S health service is “hanging by a thread” as 92 per cent of nurses and midwives believe patient safety is at risk, a new study has revealed.

An Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation poll found significant concern among healthcare workers for their own wellbeing and patient safety.

Some 63 per cent of respondents said they considered quitting in the past month, with 44.5 per cent saying it was due to stress.

And 76 per cent said staffing levels and skill mix did not meet the required clinical and patient demands

INMO president Karen McGowan said the survey shows her members are struggling and if another crisis like the Covid-19 pandemic happened they would not cope.

She added: “These services and the people working in them are hanging by a thread. It’s frightening to think what would happen if they had to withstand another serious shock.”

The poll also found that 69 per cent said work is impacting their physical health, while 40 per cent believe it negatively impacts their mental health. civilians are sheltering in Rafah after evacuating from other parts of Gaza amid Israel’s war on Hamas.

Biden has called on Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to do far more to protect innocent civilians in Gaza.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha said her members cannot increase bed capacity or staffing quotas – and the Government must do so.

If not, she said the health service risks a collapse in staff and “catastrophic patient outcomes as a result”.

Duty

She added: “Every year our members fulfil their duty to their patients and the services they provide, by raising the pressing issues that need to be addressed and demonstrating the impact of inaction on their services and patients. Year after year, they find that they are not being met halfway. “We have clear data on the impact of unsafe staffing on outcomes. We have data on the relationship between overcrowding and whether or not patients will survive; and here we have clear figures saying nurses and midwives are extremely stressed, working unpaid hours, and leaving their jobs.

“The failure to act on data is simply irresponsible.”
