COMEDIAN Oliver Callan has reacted to Doireann Garrihy’s ‘earthquake’ departure from RTE – saying she was leaving for a life “less restrictive”.

The Nine O’Clock Show presenter (31) was among the first to comment on Garrihy’s news that she is leaving 2FM Breakfast after five years.

Doireann said she was leaving the show she co-hosts with Carl Mullan and Donncha O’Callaghan at the end of May.

She said that she wants to concentrate on her podcasts, The Laughs of your Life and Doireann and Friends and “pursue the projects I’ve been dreaming about”.

Reacting to the news, Callan said Doireann’s departure is “a bit of an earthquake.”

He said: “Very sorry to see the breaking news in the media world that Doireann Garrihy is leaving RTE 2FM after five years on the Breakfast Show there, they are going to miss her greatly over there.

“It is a bit of an earthquake to be honest in radio circles but she’ll continue broadcasting until the end of this month and then she’s gone.”

He said it seems like she is “going to focus on her podcast” where “maybe the rules are less restrictive and restricting for her”.

Callan continued: “She’s very popular, she’s a really effervescent talent. She will do very well out there, very well on the outside.”

The presenter said she was “so glad” that the head of RTE 2FM, Dan Healy, “took a chance” on her in 2019, but said it was now “time for ventures new”.

Garrihy, who also co-hosts Dancing with the Stars with Jennifer Zamparelli, paid tribute to her colleagues.

Life

She said: “Donncha and Carl, I have found brothers for life in you both. What an absolute blast of craic, ridiculous immaturity and lifelong bond building. “Anyone would be blessed to work with one gentleman every day, I was beyond blessed to work with two.”

The broadcaster thanked her loyal 2FM listeners: “through thick and thin you’ve been there. Your support has meant everything”. She continued: “There wasn’t a day I didn’t hop out of the bed at 5am. Thank you for welcoming me with open ears back in 2019 and every day since.

“As we would say to our lovely callers on air, good luck and thanks.”
