A WOMAN sustained a broken eye socket, stitches to her face, a collapsed lung, bruises to her body and broken ribs arising from an alleged assault on St Patrick’s Day by her then boyfriend, a court has heard.

Det Sgt Kevin O’Hagan told Ennis District Court, where Mark Hayes (35) is charged with two counts of assault causing harm, that gardai were objecting to bail.

It is the State’s case Mr Hayes, of Aidan Park, Shannon, assaulted his ex at a Rineanna View house on St Patrick’s Day and a man unknown to him on April 11, at Aidan Park.

Hospital

Det Sgt O’Hagan said the woman spent 11 days in hospital and required surgery on her eye socket.

It will also be alleged Mr Hayes punched and kicked a man unknown to him on the street.

Det O’Hagan said: “My biggest fear is interference with witnesses and especially the alleged victim from March 17th.”

Solicitor for Mr Hayes, Stiofan Fitzpatrick, said there was no evidence of witness interference.

Det Sgt O’Hagan said no bail conditions could allay Garda concerns.

Judge Alec Gabbett refused bail and remanded Mr Hayes in custody to appear via video link on April 16.

A NEPHEW of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has been jailed for 21 months for attempting to rob a woman who was withdrawing money from an ATM.

Alan Hutch (41), who suffers mental health problems, approached the woman from behind while she was using the ATM near Tesco on Dublin’s Talbot Street.

Hutch then grabbed her hands after she had taken €100 out of the machine and a struggle ensued.

The woman managed to hold onto the money and ‘got a good look at Hutch’, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard.

A number of members of the public tried to intervene before Hutch fled the scene. The woman was left shaken and suffered a sore hand and sore nails.

Hutch, of Portland Row in the north inner city, pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery on March 3, 2023.

He has a number of previous convictions including assault causing harm, burglary, robbery and escape from lawful custody, the court heard.

Warrants

Garda Cathy Giblin told Judge Martin Nolan several CCTV cameras were in the area and a number of gardai were able to identify Hutch.

Two warrants were executed for his home at Portland Row and a Peter McVerry hostel where he was staying for a time and a number of clothing items were seized.

Gardai discovered Hutch in the kitchen of the Portland Row address and arrested him. He was remanded in custody and remains in custody since he was refused bail in April 2023.

Alan Hutch is a son of Eddie Hutch (59), who was murdered at his home on February 8, 2016, in a revenge attack for the notorious Regency Hotel shooting three days earlier.

His mother Jane Hutch (66) was found dead from a suspected heart attack at the family home in January this year.

Eddie Hutch’s brother, Gerry Hutch, was found not guilty by the Special Criminal Court in April last year of the murder of David Byrne at the Regency.

Judge Nolan said Hutch has a long record of convictions, some of which are relevant.
