IRELAND BASKS IN SUN WAVE HELLO TO SUMMER Temps set to hit 21C today

- ■■Ciara O’LOUGHLIN

IT’S time to slap on the sunscreen as the country will see highs of 21C today, but the good weather is short-lived as storms are on the horizon tomorrow.

Yesterday the country saw the hottest day of the year so far, as a temperature of 23.9C was recorded in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

While sunshine and high temperatures will remain for now, Met Eireann forecaster Andrew Doran-Sherlock has warned it is fleeting as heavy showers are expected tomorrow.

“Saturday is another warm and bright day filled with sunshine, a bit of cloud building in the west during the evening and with that could come a few showers, but generally it’s a dry and sunny day,” he said.

The forecaster has warned that people need to take skin precautions, such as wearing and reapplying sunscreen, as today the UV index is bordering between moderate and high.

But he added that we need to make the most of the glorious weather because showers are on the way tomorrow for the start of an unsettled week. “There will be some further rain and showers moving in on Sunday, some of them could be heavy and there’s a potential for some thunderstorms over Ulster and Leinster,” the forecaster said.

“But still temperatures high enough. It will be coolest in the west, and warmest in the east, ranging from 16C to 21C.

Unsettled

“Into early next week it will be generally unsettled with further rain and showers and some heavy falls are possible, temperatures generally ranging 14C to 17C so a touch milder than average but a fair decrease from what we have at the moment.”

On Monday, showers will be heaviest over the eastern half of the country with a chance of thunderstorms.

It will begin to get considerably cooler on Tuesday, with highest temperatures of 11C to 14C, with unsettled and at times rainy weather continuing.
