Deborah was an inspirational speaker at Kinsale graduation

Irish Examiner - County - - News -

The inspiring guest speaker at the recent Kinsale College graduation ceremony was Deborah Somorin who provided an uplifting presentation on overcoming homelessness and how education had saved her and her little boy.

The Dublin woman, a chartered accountant and now in her early 20s, was 13 years old when she became homeless with her family in the capital over 10 years ago.

She is the founder of the not for profit company, Empower the Family, that will open student accommodation with affordable quality childcare for lone parents between 18-23 in third level education.

Ms Somorin spoke at the graduation event in the Sáile centre, Kinsale, where over 600 people were present.

Liz Moynihan, director of Kinsale College, outlined the unique provision offered by the college in its wide range of courses. She said that forging of links with local and regional employers who offer valuable work experience options was fundamental to such endeavours, and helped sow the seeds for wide-ranging entrepreneurial ventures for the graduates of Kinsale College.

Students graduated from Level 5 & 6 courses in healthcare, childcare, office administration, business, horticulture, art, multimedia, TV & film production, drama, outdoor education, professional cookery, and in a new and exciting English course.

The college offers students the most up-to-date, relevant and bespoke career guidance advice, Ms Moynihan said. It ensures that its courses complement labour market demands while being recognised by third level colleges as a sound basis for the pursuit of disciplines at undergraduate and future postgraduate levels.

The college, she said, has only just begun in terms of driving and developing their unique ethos and excellence as a centre of learning. Possibilities for future development are boundless, she added.

Kinsale College is currently enrolling for September 2018 and will hold its next open day on Friday, August 31, from 10am to 2pm.

Liz Moynihan, Kinsale College director, Shannon O’Sullivan, healthcare student of the year, and Deirdre Mullins, Haven Bay Nursing Home.
