New fire station should have a gym, says councillor

Calls have been made to provide a gym in a new fi station being built in a West Cork town, and to transform the existing station into an ecommerce centre.

A meeting of the West Cork municipal district council was shown plans for a new fire station at The Miles in Clonakilty. Officials said the single storey building will be located near the new Clonakilty Blackpudding Company factory which opened last year.

Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan said the current fire station was not fit for purpose. “So it’s fantastic, we’re gett g a bigger and better fire station,” he said.

He asked officials if they could provide a gym in the new building for the part-time firemen.

“They’re really as full-time as you get because they have to stay around Clonakilty in case of an emergency. They’re essentially on call all the time. They have these (gym) facilities in the city,” Cllr O’Sullivan said.

In relation to the future use of the current building at Rossa Street, the Clonakiltybased councillor said: “We’ve seen the success of the Ludgate in Skibbereen as an ecommerce centre. An e-hub is also needed in Clonakilty.”

Officials said the proposed new fi ans had gone through the public consultation process. The creation of a gym, however, would be dependant on funding.
