Wedding of the Week
Catherine and Donal’s fairytale of New York comes true
NEW YORK will always have a special place in the hearts of Cork newlyweds Catherine Fitzpatrick and Dónal Kelly.
As they watched the sunset from a rooftop overlooking the Empire State Building in July 2016, Dónal popped the question. “He had asked my dad’s permission to marry me in the men’s room at Shannon Airport before our flight because it was the only room I couldn’t follow him into!” said Catherine.
The paths of Catherine, a primary school teacher, and Dónal, a member of An Garda Siochana, first crossed in 2009 at a barbecue organised by a mutual friend. “I didn’t stay at the barbecue for long as I didn’t know many people there and as I made my way to the front door, I met Dónal by the stairs in his uniform,” said Catherine. “I mentioned to our mutual friend that I needed my passport signed so he passed on my details to Dónal after I’d left. Long story short, I popped into the Garda station the following day and the rest is history!”
The couple were wed in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, in July, by Canon John O’Donovan and held their reception in the five-star Muckross Park Hotel.
The bride’s sister Aileen Fitzpatrick was her maid of honour, while her cousins Louise O’Flynn and Megan Geaney were her bridesmaids with Catherine’s goddaughter Tara Geaney joining forces with Grace Kearney to take on flowergirl duties.
Aileen took care of the bridal makeup while Jewel Beauty ensured the bridesmaids were picture-perfect.
Dónal’s brother Brendan Kelly travelled home from Australia to take on the key role of best man, while his friends Alan Dinan and James Davis were by his side as groomsmen.
Leading photographer Emily Doran captured the big day on camera.
Music was provided by the Munster String Quartet and singers Lorcan, Cillian and Siofradh Geaney.
The stylish bride wore a gown by American designer Watters, which she sourced in Memories bridal boutique in Cork.
Award-winning hairstylist Tricia O’Sullivan created a soft upstyle for Catherine and Tie the Knot Weddings provided the floral arrangements. Hidden in the bridal bouquet was a ring which belonged to Dónal’s late mother, Teresa.
Wedding band Top of the Popz was a big hit with the guests, who were also entertained by selfie mirrors by Selfie Mirrors Kerry and Selfie Mirrors Ireland, while Liutas Films provided the videography service.
Brian Roche of Baker Boy Cakes made the customized three-tier wedding cake.
The Glanmire-based newlyweds started their honeymoon in Miami before embarking on a Caribbean cruise and completing the holiday in Mexico.
