IT WAS a huge undertaking, 136 teams competing in the now annual Passage West Ladies Football blitz.

Young girls at U8 and U10 level from 13 different counties converged in the club grounds for a one day blitz that once again proved a resounding success.

All the Munster counties participated plus teams from Dublin, Kildare, Wexford, Laois and Kilkenny.

Nineteen pitches were used across the field and it was estimated that there was five to six thousand people present on the day.

The blitz was preceded by a grand parade and each club got to play four matches.

The duration of each game was 12 minutes and in total 2,700 children were present.

At the end of it all, each child received a medal and a goodie bag sponsored by Aldi.

The most colourful team in the parade award went to Macroom.

The entire process took eight months of planning and it was a full community effort. The local soccer club, men’s shed, rowing club, karate club and tidy towns all gave their support to the venture and there was great sponsorship from a number of quarters, among them Barry’s Tea, the Evening Echo, McDonalds Douglas, CMP, Supervalu, M and J Gleeson Group, Burke-Ward, O’Donovans, Fresh-Fast Chips.

The medals were sponsored by Paul Hanlon IPH Construction.

According to the organiser, Francis McEveney, it was a fantastic day in the harbour village.

“It was, this thing all started out ten years ago with just eight teams and now we had 136.

“The whole community rowed in behind us and the children had a great day in the club. We are very grateful to all our sponsors and anybody who lent their support. It took a lot of planning to put it all together but it worked out very well.

“The day itself brightened up after a misty start and the main theme of the whole thing was enjoyment for the young girls and we had a disco and a barbeque to finish with CL Meats helping generously as well’’.
