‘Horse and Riders’ to get a new stable in Mallow

An iconic sculpture, which stood for two decades at the centre of one of the busiest roundabouts in Co Cork, is to be moved to a new home.

The sculpture by Michael Quane stood in the centre of the roundabout at Annabella, Mallow.

It had to be moved as the roundabout was reduced in size to provide extra carriageway space to ease traffic gridlock into the future, primarily because of the expansion of Dairygold’s business, which would generate significant additional truck movements.

County council officials have said the statue has been cleaned up and will be placed shortly at a new site.

It has been decided to locate it on the southern side of the main bridge crossing the River Blackwater on the N20 (main Cork-Limerick road) as it will be highly visible there to passing traffic.
