Work begins to clear site for new primary school in Kanturk
Preliminary works have commenced on site to make way for the construction of a new primary school in Kanturk.
Welcoming the commencement of the enabling works, local councillors John Paul O’ Shea and Gerard Murphy said that they were delighted to finally see progress on site.
The Department of Education and Skills obtained the relevant licences from the county council to construct a portion of new roadway from Mill Road to the proposed school entrance.
The works involve placing underground the ESB power cables that traverse the site.
The council lo rs said works will pave the way for the OPW to proceed to tender for the main works contractor for the new school.
“As local representatives, we are very conscious of the fact there has been a significant delay in the progress of this new school over the last number of years.”
The proposed project involves an amalgamation of two schools into a new building. “This is an important step forward and in particular, for the pupils, staff and parents of both schools,” Mr O’Shea said. Mr Murphy said works will progress over the coming weeks.
