Lynch re­warded for Celtic Games medal

A young all-around ath­lete from Old Abbey AC near Wa­ter­fall, who won a sil­ver medal at the in­ter­na­tional Celtic Games in Scot­land, is the lat­est re­cip­i­ent of the Cork City Sports Ath­lete of the Month Award.

Although Brian Lynch’s main event is the de­cathlon, it was the 400m hur­dles where he gained sec­ond place in Scot­land on Au­gust 4 in a time of 59.31.

This was the cul­mi­na­tion of a great sea­son for Brian who e x c e l l e d i n va r i o u s dis­ci­plines.

“It was a good trip away, I came sec­ond in that race although I didn’t run a fast time. We did well as a team, we were close to win­ning but were pipped by Scot­land,” he ex­plained.

The 17-year-old had rep­re­sented Ire­land with dis­tinc­tion in the de­cathlon at the Euro­pean Un­der-18 Cham­pi­onships held in Hun­gary ear­lier in July.

Over the two days of com­pe­ti­tion, he amassed a to­tal of 6,306 points. He got off to a great start, run­ning a per­sonal best of 11.61 for the 100m which gave him sec­ond place and 730 points.

Brian fol­lowed this per­for­mance with an­other PB, jump­ing 6.61m in the long jump.

He also recorded a jump of 6.74m which counted to­wards his points. Brian fin­ished off the morn­ing ses­sion with a best throw of 12.48m in the shot put.

At the end of the first day, he was placed 24th with a to­tal of 3,388 points.Day two saw Brian im­prov­ing his pole vault best three times, ul­ti­mately clear­ing a height of 3.60m on his first at­tempt.

He fin­ished off in style, his time of 4:46.33 gain­ing him 10th place in the 1500m and a fi­nal rank­ing of 26th for the gru­elling 10-event com­pe­ti­tion.

In pre­sent­ing Brian with his award, Liam O’Brien, Tech­ni­cal Di­rec­tor of the Cork City Sports, con­grat­u­lated him on his achieve­ments.
