Lynch rewarded for Celtic Games medal
A young all-around athlete from Old Abbey AC near Waterfall, who won a silver medal at the international Celtic Games in Scotland, is the latest recipient of the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month Award.
Although Brian Lynch’s main event is the decathlon, it was the 400m hurdles where he gained second place in Scotland on August 4 in a time of 59.31.
This was the culmination of a great season for Brian who e x c e l l e d i n va r i o u s disciplines.
“It was a good trip away, I came second in that race although I didn’t run a fast time. We did well as a team, we were close to winning but were pipped by Scotland,” he explained.
The 17-year-old had represented Ireland with distinction in the decathlon at the European Under-18 Championships held in Hungary earlier in July.
Over the two days of competition, he amassed a total of 6,306 points. He got off to a great start, running a personal best of 11.61 for the 100m which gave him second place and 730 points.
Brian followed this performance with another PB, jumping 6.61m in the long jump.
He also recorded a jump of 6.74m which counted towards his points. Brian finished off the morning session with a best throw of 12.48m in the shot put.
At the end of the first day, he was placed 24th with a total of 3,388 points.Day two saw Brian improving his pole vault best three times, ultimately clearing a height of 3.60m on his first attempt.
He finished off in style, his time of 4:46.33 gaining him 10th place in the 1500m and a final ranking of 26th for the gruelling 10-event competition.
In presenting Brian with his award, Liam O’Brien, Technical Director of the Cork City Sports, congratulated him on his achievements.
