Boost in numbers for Rapid Response
The highly-acclaimed West Cork Rapid Response team of a dozen paramedics, which attends emergencies throughout the sprawling region, is expected to be increased by a further three operatives in the near future.
Confirmation came as the organisation’s fundraising arm received a welcome cash injection of nearly €5,000 from a well-attended evening of lifestyle tips, nutrition advice and cooking demonstrations in Bandon recently.
More than 300 people attended the event, which, according to Kate Crowley of the West Cork Rapid Response fundraising committee, was extremely well received.
Psychologist Shane Martin received the rapt attention of the audience as he spoke about the need to keep life simple and for people not to impose unrealistic expectations upon themselves.
“We had not expected such a level of interest in well-being and psychology,” said Ms Crowley, who said that Mr Martin’s accessible and humorous approach went down extremely well with the audience.
“The message was to keep life simple and be happy with where you are at and what you have and not to worry about other people to impose unrealistic expectations on yourself,” she said.
Also featured on the Health and Wellbeing night were dietitian Paula Mee, and exOlympian and now cookbook author Derval O’Rourke.
Dr Jason van der Velde, the medic and emergency responder who leads the WCRR team, made a speech at the event, paying tribute to Bandon Co-op and the National Dairy Council for their support with the fundraiser.
WCRR is an entirely voluntary group working in partnership with and supporting the existing HSE Emergency Medical services.
Dr Jason is currently supported by a team of 12 paramedics. The money raised at the event, almost €5,000 in total, will assist with equipment for the team whose numbers, Ms Crowley said, are set to increase further by the beginning of 2019 with the appointment of three more paramedics. Ms Crowley also paid warm tribute to the strong support shown by communities in towns and villages throughout the West Cork region which aid the area’s voluntary emergency service.
Cooking up a storm at the National Dairy Council evening at the Munster Arms Hotel in conjunction with Bandon Co Op is cookbook author Derval O’Rourke, with Dr Jason van der Velde and Teddy Cashman, chairman of NDC.
